When Chaos Becomes Connection: My Perfectly Imperfect Meeting
What do a broken projector, a group of strangers, and a contractor-grade extension cord have in common?
The first-ever Mic Drop Club meeting in Rapid City, SD, of course!
I recently hosted the first meeting of our new women’s speaking club, and it had all the makings of a complete disaster.
Picture this:
👉 Zero confirmed attendees (unless you count my mom, who was lovingly required to be there).
👉 A broken projector in the library conference room.
👉 My backup mini-projector’s cord was three feet too short to reach the outlet, balanced on a stand made for a cell phone.
👉 And the meeting was scheduled to start in T-minus zero minutes.
As stress sweat and an unexpected heat flash surged through my body, something amazing happened—a group of generous, beautiful, and unexpected women walked in.
My attendance skyrocketed from two to eleven! 🚀
Before panic could take over, my new community jumped into action. Heather took charge of the tech issues. Rhonda sprinted to her car and returned with a commercial-grade extension cord. Another woman organized the sign-in sheets while my mom made sure everyone got lunch.
In an instant, chaos turned into connection. We didn’t even need an icebreaker. 💥
Half of us were solving tech problems, the other half were improvising systems, and together we made it work. What began with chaos quickly transformed into laughter, support, and meaningful conversation.
What could have been a mortifying failure turned into a huge blessing, and a memory I’ll never forget. It was a perfect, imperfect start.
Later, I crossed paths with many of those same women at a networking event. Not one person mentioned the messy beginning. They talked about the breakthroughs. The laughter. The energy. Their excitement had other women leaning in, asking how they could join the next meeting.
That is the power of a supportive community.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up, pitching in, and growing together, even when things go sideways.
This is exactly why Mic Drop Club exists. ✨
We are a community for women who want a supportive space to find their voice and champion each other. We turn stress into strength, panic into progress, and potential disasters into connection.
If you’re looking for a place to develop your public speaking skills alongside incredible women, I’d love for you to join us.
